Process

Step 1
With your partner, create a chart to organize your research on the 9 planets. You could use a word processor or create a chart on paper. Your chart should have 10 rows (1 row for the column titles and 9 rows for the planets) and 2 columns with the titles Planets and Data.

Step 2
Open a web browser and go to This NASA website or This National Geographic Website
Click through and read the profiles of all of the planets. Make sure to add information to your chart that you feel is important. Possible data to record might be; temperature, geographical features, distance from the sun, atmospheric conditions. You may find it helpful to have one partner open the web browser and the other partner to enter data into the chart.

Step 3
Once you have collected the data for your chart, you need to start analyzing each planet and comparing them to Earth.  You now need to write a formal recommendation letter to the Canadian Space Agency informing them which planet you think is most hospitable to humans. Make sure you back up your recommendation with valid research data (from your chart).

Remember, there is no "right" answer in this assignment. Your research and original ideas will be needed to help you make a clear, informed recommendation to the CSA.

Your letter can be written by hand or you can a word processor. Remember to follow all of the guidelines for proper formal letters. Click here to review the format for a proper formal letter.

Although you will be working with your partner to research the planets and fill in your chart, each student needs to hand in their own letter.

Step 4
Hand in your chart and recommendation letter to your teacher.
